700 protesting computer teachers detained in Mohali

A day after 40 computer teachers were booked for agitation, the district police on Saturday detained around 700 protesting teachers, including 150 women, who have been demanding regularisation of their jobs for the past few months.

A day after 40 computer teachers were booked for agitation, the district police on Saturday detained around 700 protesting teachers, including 150 women, who have been demanding regularisation of their jobs for the past few months.

Teachers from across Punjab joined the protest at Phase 8 here outside the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) building.


Gurvinder Singh, president, Computer Teachers Sanja Front, said they had completed provisional period of two years after which the government had promised to regularise them under the Punjab education department.

"Even after giving us notifications, the government did not initiate the process further," he said.
On Friday, around 40 protesting teachers were booked under sections 107 and 105 of the Indian Penal Code and sent to judicial custody.


Parminder Singh Savia and Gurwinder Singh Bajwa, who led the union, were also sent to the judicial custody after a first information report was registered against them.
Gaganpreet Kaur, wife of Parminder Singh and a protesting teacher, said the police raided the houses of protesting teachers across Punjab last night.


Teachers' demands

·About 700 computer teachers, recruited on contract basis, were promised to be regularised after completing their provisional period.

·Even as the government increased their salaries, they did not get medical allowance and annual increment besides other benefits the regular employees get.
