Three days after he took charge, the UT new adviser Vijay Dev has demanded and received an extra pilot Gypsy on the grounds that he has increased threat perception and would be moving around frequently.
A pilot Gypsy comprises four policemen and a driver.
Sources in Chandigarh police told HT this was a departure from protocol as usually an adviser is given an escort Gypsy, besides two police security officers with 15 guards securing his residence.
The UT police received a letter from the UT home department stating that the new adviser required more security cover than usual as the threat perception to him was more, having served as the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO). The letters adds that in Delhi, Dev did have an additional pilot Gypsy.
Interestingly, the UT deputy commissioner has only an escort Gypsy and two personnel Security Officer (PSOs) as security with five guards deployed at the residence.
SDM (south) Kashish Mittal said a meeting of a Protection Review Group (PRG), headed by the Chandigarh inspector general of police, senior officers from Punjab and Haryana police department and officials from the Intelligence Bureau had been convened to discuss the issue on Friday and the decision to scale up the security was taken.
“The adviser had high-security in Delhi and had threat perception by name. So, the PRG recommended the case, but the final approval will be given by UT administrator.”

When contacted, the adviser said the police was the appropriate authority to take a call on the issue.
