The city has a sanctioned strength of seven Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, but only three of these posts are filled. Two senior superintendents of police (SSPs — Sukhchain Singh Gill and Maneesh Chaudhry — and IGP RP Upadhyaya are deployed now.
To get over the shortage of of ficers, a de puty inspector general (DIG) is expected to be appointed in a couple of days and the name of AS Cheema, additional commissioner of police, special cell, New Delhi, is doing the rounds.
“I have re quested the UT administration to take up the matter with the ministry of home affairs for the posting of IPS officers in Chandigarh. The shortage has been worse after the recent retirement of RS Ghumman,” said the IGP.
The Chandig arh Police is required to fill the posts of UT IGP, AIG, SP headquarters, SSP City, SSP Traffic, SSP operations and the Commandant of the Indian Reserve Batallion (IRB).
An ASP Parminder Singh did join some time back, but he cannot be given senior posts as he is junior scale officer. UT SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill now holds the charge of SSP Operations, the Economic Offences Wing, the CID, and also the crime against women wing.
SSP traffic Maneesh Chaudhry has the additional charge of vigilance, IRB, security, headquarters, additional commandant home guard and IG jails.
