The Punjab State Narcotics Control Bureau (PSNCB), set up to launch anti-drug operations, will have four field units — Bathinda, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar — headed by an assistant inspector general of police (AIG) each.
The bureau being headed by director-cum-inspector general (IG) Ishwar Singh will also have two deputy inspector general (DIG)-rank officers, one looking after headquarters, training and de-addiction programmes, and the other to supervise field units.
The bureau will also have districts units.
The information was provided by deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal at a press conference here on Wednesday. “The bureau will be fully strengthened with deployment of suf ficient manpower and other resources like transportation and communication systems,” he said. “The IG (director) of the bureau will report directly to the state director general of police (DGP).”
The charter of duties of the bureau is to identify those committing offences under the NDPS Act and take swift action against the culprits. “The bureau will ensure that no illegal, habit forming drugs are available for consumption anywhere in the state,” IG Ishwar Singh said.
The bureau would also liaise with other state police forces and central agencies such as Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Border Security Force (BSF), Customs and the central excise department for ensuring that drugs are not pushed into Punjab illegally. Further, it would liaise with health department for taking effective action against people selling or manufacturing synthetic drugs.
