Taking serious note of recent violence on DAV College campus in Sector 10, UT administration has issued summons to at least 22 students owing affiliation to Student Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) and Panjab University Student Union (PUSU) and asked to appear before the SDM (central) Mahavir Kaushik on March 19.
The local police had furnished a list of troublemakers - 11 each from SOPU and PUSU - to the administration for action against them under Section 107/150 of CrPC.
Sector 11 police station SHO Gurmukh Singh said that these students would be required to furnish surety bonds and undertaking of staying away from anti-social activities. Strict action would be taken against those who fail to comply.
On March 12, PUSU leader Jeewanjot Singh Chahal and Charndev Singh were shot at while five other members of the party suffered injures after they were allegedly attacked by a group of SOPU supporters.
In last few years, a large number of students have been booked for indulging in violence. Names of more than 100 students have featured in different case from 2005 till date.
Besides, police have issued advisory to Panjab university for making elaborate security arrangements for the upcoming events like 'Jhankaar-2012' to keep students with a criminal past at bay so as to avoid any untoward incident.
The university has been advised to install CCTV cameras at all the sensitive points and to hire 100 private security guards to assist their security staff, besides banning entry of outsiders in any of these events.

The police will also lay nakas at different parts of the campus to keep a watch on troublemakers on regular basis.
Panjab University, on its part, have sensitised the students and have also taken undertaking from representatives of various studies bodies for staying away from violence.
Dean Student Welfare Prof Amrik Singh Ahluwalia said that they were making efforts to keep campus violence-free.
