In Amritsar on her maiden visit, actor Navni Parihar is awestruck as she takes in the green fields. “I am fascinated by the Khasa Railway Station and the sarson ke khet which we have only seen in Yash Raj films,” she exclaims with a smile.
After a gap of nearly four years, Navni is back on the small screen with the show Gurbani, which will go on air on Colors from March 18. In the serial, Navni plays a character called Rano, a 40-year-old Punjabi woman who has been waiting for her NRI husband for 20 years. “After my last show (Babul Ka Aangann Chootey Na) I was getting a lot of offers, but nothing excited me.
But when I heard the story of Gurbani, I started crying and was confident of playing Rano,” says the actor. Rano, explains Navni, has been a very demanding and challenging role to play. “Almost 90 per cent of the time, I start crying while emoting because it is such an emotional story. And since I don’t use glycerin, so much of crying also leads to a headache at times,” she quips.
Navni has been a part of films including Tanu Weds Manu, Page 3, Lucky and Jail. Though a veteran actor on television and movies, Navni is happy working with young actors, who, she says, now enter the profession after being trained in the art. “When I joined, there was only one channel, so there were limited shows and limited actors. In fact, I didn’t even know how to do my makeup. But now, the actors are very talented and trained,” she says. When asked who her favourite television actor is, Navni quickly points out the name of Surekha Sikri, popular as Kalyani Devi in the show Balika Vadhu.
