Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Friday approved a plan of nearly Rs 300 crore to equip government medical colleges at Patiala, Amritsar and Faridkot, besides the cancer hospital at Bathinda, with super-specialty facilities.
"No cancer patient would be deprived of medical care even if the state health department is in a state of penury. Patients would be provided the best treatment at these hospitals equipped with the latest medical care, research and diagnostic facilities," said Badal, adding that "paucity of funds would not hamper the state's mission to provide the best available treatment to patients inflicted with cancer."
Badal also gave the nod for the recruitment of qualified and experienced faculty in nuclear medicine, surgical oncology, medical oncology and radiotherapy in these government medical colleges, besides the installation of latest equipment in the departments of radio diagnosis, blood transfusion and pathology. He asked the principal secretary, health and family welfare, to bring a composite proposal for approval in the next cabinet meeting, slated to be held here on May 28.
The CM also gave the go-ahead for direct recruitment through a departmental selection committee, headed by the chairman of the Medical Council of India (MCI) board of governors Dr KK Talwar, by taking these posts out of the purview of the Punjab Public Service Commission.

{{/usCountry}}Badal also asked the principals of government medical colleges of Patiala and Amritsar to propose a comprehensive plan for upgradation of medical equipment and staff to the 14th Finance Commission for seeking requisite funds for the purpose. The principal, government medical college, Patiala, told Badal that he had already sent a detailed proposal of Rs.165 crore for the upgradation of medical equipment and infrastructure.
