An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) reportedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service revolver on Thursday morning at Parao police station, where he was posted.

Sources said that Karan Singh (57) took the extreme step as he was upset over a rape case registered against him on November 27.

Constable Shamsher Singh was the first one to find Karan lying in a pool of blood. He informed SHO Ranbir Singh and Karan was rushed to civil hospital, where doctors pronounced him brought dead.

Soon, senior police officers, including deputy commissioner of police Venod Kaushik, reached the spot and during the search of his luggage, a suicide note was recovered.

Karan was a native of Katlahari village in Karnal district.

Sources said in his four-page suicide note, Karan had claimed that the rape case registered against him was a conspiracy hatched by three police officials, two journalists of Mullana and the complainant woman. He further stated that he was killing himself as the allegations would bring a bad name to him and his family.

Sources said that three assistant commissioners of police had separately inquired into the allegations of the woman and had given clean chit to the ASI.

However, on November 18, the woman filed another complaint at Barara police station against Karan Singh and in view of the latest Supreme Court directions, a case was registered against him.

The DCP said that the content of the suicide note would be taken seriously and investigations would start against the persons named in it.
