A celebrated academician and alumnus of Panjab University, Prof Ajit Singh, has accepted the university's offer to hold the coveted Dr Manmohan Singh Chair.
Professor Ajit Singh is professor emeritus, University of Cambridge, and is a life fellow of Queen's College, Cambridge.
His named was recommended by a committee constituted by the PU vice-chancellor (V-C). The recommendation was unanimously accepted in the recently held syndicate meeting.
"I regard it as a great honour not only because of Dr Manmohan Singh's outstanding qualities but also because he was my teacher at Panjab University when I started studying economics," he said.
Constituted in 2009, the chair is a part of the PU department of economics and the university had so far failed to find a suitable candidate for it.
Earlier, the university had offered the post to Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, who declined the offer. Prof Ajit Singh is an alumnus of Panjab University and began teaching economics at Cambridge in 1965.
Prof Ajit Singh has published several research papers, advised several governments at the highest level (including India) and assisted international organisations focusing on development, during his career.
Prof Singh's current research is concerned with the rise of India and China and their economic interactions with advanced and emerging countries. The research re-examines, among other lines of inquiry, structural questions such as the respected roles of manufacturing and services as engines of long-term economic growth in the two countries.
