Directed by Anshul Sharma, Saare Jahaan Se Mehnga releases on March 8 and stars Sanjay in the lead. Better known as ‘Apple Singh’ after the character icon he portrayed for ESPN Star Sports during the 1999 World Cup Cricket, Sanjay is popular for the numerous comic roles he enacted in Hindi films.

“After graduating from the National School of Drama in 1989, I went to Mumbai in 1992,” recalls the Patna-born actor. In the 23 years that he spent in the entertainment industry, Sanjay did films such as Satya (1998), All The Best (2009) and Phas Gaye Re Obama (2010) amongst others. But, it was TV that brought him fame.

The actor’s roles in soaps including Office Office (in which he plays ‘Shukla ji’) and Public Sub Jaanti Hai have been much appreciated. According to Sanjay, it is comedy that rules in the film industry. “I have observed that there is no particular genre that always does well, though overall, the Indian audience seems to love comedy. In Bollywood, there is herd-mentality — if romantic films do well, everyone starts making romantic films, if films on dacoits are being made, directors turn their attention to those.”
