The Chandigarh police have added 59 motorcycles, including 50 TVS Apaches and nine Royal Enfield Bullets, and two recovery vans to their fleet of vehicles on Tuesday.
The motorcycles will be used for patrolling on city roads and attending emergency calls, while some would be distributed among the police stations in the city.
The vans have been given to the traffic police.
While the Chandigarh police had sought 92 vehicles, the ministry of home affairs only sanctioned funds for 59 motorcycles and two vans.
The new vehicles were flagged off by UT adviser KK Sharma. UT inspector general of police RP Upadhyaya and superintendent of police Sukhchain Singh Gill were also present on the occasion.
Speaking at the event, Sharma said that efficient machinery was essential to help enforcement agencies curb crime rate.
Referring to promotion of Chandigarh police personnel, Sharma said that he was trying to settle the issue of promotions of some officers of inspectors to deputy superintendent rank. “There has been a delay in the promotions of inspector rank officials of Chandigarh police and efforts are being made to solve the problem,” he said.
Besides additional vehicles, projects such as a housing complex for at Dhanas, a GO Mess at Sector 26, a state-of-art shooting range, water cannon, another vajra (anti-riot) vehicle and traffic van exhibition are also in the pipeline for the Chandigarh Police.
