The scheme, which has been modelled on the one by Punjab government, will come into force retrospectively, from September 11, 2014.

The step has been taken to encourage students from the UT to take up careers in the defence forces as officers, said Lt Col RK Singh (retd), zila sainik welfare officer.

Chandigarh hikes assistance to non-pensioners of WW-2

The UT administration has also approved a 250% enhancement in the financial assistance being given to World War-2 veterans who were released from the Indian Armed Forces without any pension after the war. It would now be Rs 7,500 a month. There are 16 such identified veterans in the UT.

Since these veterans could not earn their pensions due to early release from the services, they were being paid a very meagre amount as financial assistance. It was Rs 200 in 1997, enhanced to Rs 1,000 in 2009 and Rs 3,000 a month in 2013. That's now been more than doubled.
