Despite large number of bank accounts opened by city national banks for the students of Classes nursery to 8 of government schools, the target of opening accounts of all students does not seem to be going as planned with only five days left to meet the deadline set by the education department.
HT reported on March 12 that accounts of more than one lakh students would be opened by the banks by April 10. Later, the deadline was extended to April 15.
The department had decided to deposit the money in the students’ accounts for purchasing uniforms so that they do not remain at the receiving end due to a delay like last year.
Though, accounts of over 90% students have been successfully opened by now, many schools in their reports, sent to the department, have given number of reasons stating their inefficiency in opening accounts till date.
According to few reports, parents of many students do not have proper and required documents, including residential address, mismatch of child’s name in the school and Aadhar card, absence of students from the school, students living with guardian and parents living in other states and some schools have even mentioned that the accounts were not opened as houses of these students were locked.
On the condition of anonymity, a bank official said there were many such cases where parents were repeatedly asked for documents and despite information of such cases being passed to school principal, parents did not come up with the required documents.

Though we are getting great help from the school principals and staff, we are trying our best to complete the work at the earliest. But, I think that we would not be able to open all accounts by April 15,” said the bank official.
“We are not left with much accounts and moreover, many schools are already done with their work as they have opened accounts of all students,” said Kamlesh Kumar, DPI (schools).
