Channy who will superannuate on May 31, replaces 1981-batch IAS officer Dhanbir Singh Bains, who will retire on February 28. Bains has held the all-important office after the SAD-BJP (Shiromani Akali Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party) alliance came to power again in March 2012.
It is tipped that the government will rehabilitate Bains appropriately to deal with matters concerning the police.
