However, the process of issuing of warrants regarding the formal appointment from the President of India would take around three weeks as per the information. Justice Gogoi is expected to later take over as the Chief Justice of India.

Justice Gogoi, who hails from Assam started his legal practice in 1978 in the Guwahati high court and was appointed as the permanent judge of the Guwahati high court in February 2001. He was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana high court on September 9, 2010 and was later elevated as the chief justice on February 12 last year after the post fell vacant on retirement of the then chief justice Mukul Mudgal.

Against the sanctioned strength of 31 judges, the Apex Court has at present 25 judges. Though every state is represented in the Supreme Court at least by one judge, at present there is no representation from the north east states in the Supreme Court and the clearance of elevation orders of justice Gogoi has been expected for a while.
