The residential areas, particularly the southern sectors, are turning into the ugly sides of Corbusier’s City Beautiful. With heaps of filth on the roads and the green patches, and the safai karamcharis turning a blind eye to them, Sectors 40 and 41 reflect a grim picture.
While Sector 40 is a largely green area with quite a few parks, it fails in the cleanliness department. The outer and inner roads are marked with garbage piles. Sanitation workers seem to sweep dried leaves and other wastes to a pile in a corner instead of throwing them into a bin.
Outside Guru Harkrishan Public School here, there is a huge pile of garbage. Many houses are right opposite this, but nobody has cared to get it removed.
Just outside Sector 40 C, the green cover adjoining the houses has become a dump yard. The place has been littered in spite of a huge dustbin there installed by the civic body.
Rameshwar Kumar, a resident, said safai karamcharis swept away tree branches and other waste on to the pavements. Though workers are designated for every sector, they hardly ever come to clean the place, claimed residents.
Recently, the MC installed cement bins. But, even these are not being put to use.The entrance to Sector 41 A is clean with residents taking care of it, however, as one goes further the surroundings get dirtier.
In Sector 41 B, the entrance to the government quarters is full of filth. The green belt next to road also suffers from lack of maintenance. There is water overflowing there which leaks on to the road as well. Opposite Sector-41 Shivalik Public School, the area between the gurdwara and the temple has a pile of garbage. Plastic bags and discarded tetra packs are also littered in the area’s green stretches.
With garbage welcoming visitors on all entry points to the sector, neglect and poor maintenance of the area shone through.Krishan Devi, resident of Sector 41 C,said, “It is not the duty of the safai karamcharis alone. Residents should avoid littering.”
