It was a memorable day for the visually impaired students of the Institute for the Blind, Sector 26, as they went around the city as navigators for a unique car rally here on Sunday.
This is a unique initiative wherein the visually impaired become part of the rally by navigating the rally drivers on the basis of a braille road map.
The second edition of the 'Blind man car rally' was flagged off by Sukhchain Singh Gill, senior superintendent of police (SSP), UT and Kamlesh Kumar, DPI (Schools), Chandigarh. The rally was organised by Round Table India, a voluntary organisation of young men between the ages of 18 and 40.
Three participants having least penalty points were adjudged winners. The first prize went to Danish Gill and his navigator Rakesh. The first runner-up team was Atul Nandwani and his navigator Anju Bala, while the second runner-up team was of Kanwaljeet and his navigator Anuj Sharma. Prize money of Rs 10,000, Rs 8,000 and Rs 6,000 for first, second and third prize winners, respectively, was shared between the car drivers and navigators.

{{/usCountry}}The rally saw a participation of 50 cars, involving equal number of drivers and the visually impaired. The rally was flagged off from the Institute for the Blind, Sector 26, Chandigarh, and after moving around the city for around 50kms, ended at the institute itself. The driver was unaware of the route and was totally dependent on the directions given by the visually impaired student on the basis of the braille route map. The rally was judged on a normal TSD (time/speed/distance) format.
