Punjab and Haryana governments were also directed to provide two JCBs each for digging in order to start the work within three days.

The directions came from a division bench comprising acting chief justice Jasbir Singh and justice Rakesh Kumar Jain during the resumed hearing of the case on Tuesday.

The case pertains to devising ways and methods to restore the beauty and depleting water level in Sukhna Lake. The high court had taken suo motu notice of a media report and had been monitoring the case.

The bench observed that the UT administration was just wasting money by cleaning the lake bed when there was no water to fill it up. However, the counsel of UT administration submitted that the exercise was taken up for desilting the lake, which was easy to carry out when there was no water.

The HC had earlier banned any construction in Sukhna lake's catchment area so that the natural flow of water into the water body was not obstructed.

The court directed Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh to submit their reports before July 20, the next date of hearing.
