The Society for Promotion of Science and Technology in India organised its monthly lecture at the physics department at Panjab University here on Saturday. The topic for lecture was 'cloud computing and its future'.
Chandra Shekhar of Dell Computers and Pawan Behl, chief executive officer, Electro Photo Equipment Pvt Ltd, were the main speakers on the occasion.
The lecture was attended by members of the society, students, teachers of computer science from Chandigarh colleges and professors.
The speakers apprised the audience of the concept of 'cloud' and its potential in the world of computers.
They said that cloud computing was closely linked to 'virtualisation' aimed at optimising CPU usage and allowed the use of many operating systems on the same hardware - the cloud.
With the advent of cloud computing, the burden of data storage would shift from the desk-top or lap-top to servers and data can be accessed from anytime and anywhere. Thus the clouding computing would lead to economy of using information and communication technology services resulting in lower costs, the speakers stated.
The lecture also presented interesting facts such as all the server farms in the United States consumed 2% of the total energy used in that country and Nandan Nilekani's Unique Identification project, based on cloud, was the world's largest non-commercial data centre.

{{/usCountry}}The speakers also stated that the main concerns in the area seem to be security and privacy of data and all public domain net servers including social networking sites were paying special attention to these issues.
The speakers also debated that who owned the data on server. Despite all these concerns, the cloud services were becoming popular and it was the technology of the future. It had enormous potential for employment for which educational institutions should gear up and provide training to youth in this field, the speakers said.
