Intense cold wave continued to prevail in most parts of Punjab and Haryana on Monday with mercury hovering close to the freezing point at many places in the region.

Amritsar was the coldest place in the plains, recording a minimum temperature of minus 1 degrees Celsius, which was five degrees below normal.

Ludhiana also reeled under piercing chill at 1.1 degrees Celsius, five below normal while Patiala registered a low of 2.1 C, down five degrees, the Meteorological Department said in Chandigarh.

Though the sun was shining brightly in Chandigarh on Monday, the residents experienced the chill during the night as the low settled at 4 C, two below normal.

In Haryana, Narnaul was the coldest place recording a low of 1 degrees Celsius, four below normal while Ambala also shivered under intense cold at 1.6 C, down five degrees.

Karnal experienced a cold night at 2 C, five below normal while Hisar had a low of 4.8 C, down by a degree.

The Met has predicted that the cold wave is likely to continue in Punjab and Haryana until Wednesday and minimum temperatures are expected to fall further at a few places.
