Amit Kumar, 18, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his rented accommodation on Thursday.

Hamirpur district police chief, Ajay Bodh, said a case under sections 306 (abetment to sucide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under the Himachal Pradesh Educational Institutions (anti-ragging) Act, 2009 against the management of the college and two of its students in connection with the incident has been registered.

Deep Chand, father of the deceased, alleged that his son was tortured by two students - Rishi Gautam and Vicky - of Gautam Group of Colleges and was forced to commit suicide.

He alleged that his deceased son had made a complaint to the principal of the college about harassment by these students but to no avail.

Confirming that the victim had made a complaint in writing and had alleged that some senior students were harassing him, college principal, Rajneesh Gautam, said: "We had assured him of action against the culprits but we never expected that Amit would take such an extreme step."

The district police chief said the police had registered a case but none of the students or the management of the college named in the complaint had been arrested so far.

Meanwhile, resentment prevailed in the college and among parents of the deceased over the incident and they have demanded strict action against the erring students and the management of the college.
