The district consumer disputes redressal forum, Chandigarh, on Saturday asked a computer manufacturing firm, a dealer, and a service centre to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation to a Sector 51 resident, who had bought a faulty computer that could not be repaired.
Holding the firms guilty of deficiency in services, the forum also asked the manufacturer, Samsung electronics India private limited, its dealer, digital compusystems private limited New Delhi, and suprt tech engineers (Samsung's service centre at Industrial Area, Phase-I, Chandigarh, to take back the laptop and refund the money to the complainant, Anoop Chaturvedi.
Chaturvedi had bought the laptop for Rs 59,000. The forum has also asked the firms to pay the litigation expenses of `5,500.
The complainant had told the consumer forum that the laptop, despite being a high-configuration machine, was slow and encountered problems in its functioning. He further submitted that even after getting the mother board replaced, the fault was not rectified.
Denying any deficiency in services, the computer firms tried to convince the forum that there was no defect in the laptop and that its working is dependent on not only the hardware but also the software that has been installed on it.
However, unimpressed with the argument, the consumer forum, presided over by Rajan Dewan, held, "if there was any software problem in the laptop, then only the software was required to be upgraded without any need for the mother board to be replaced. The service engineers despite repeated efforts failed to diagnose the actual problem in the laptop."
