A Congress leader from Kharar, Rajwant Singh Shergill, was injured when he was allegedly fired upon by two unidentified motorcycle-borne men near Chamkaur Sahib in Rupnagar district on Sunday morning.

Police said it was around 6am when Shergill, secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, was returning in his Ford Ikon sedan after paying obeisance at Gurdwara Jhaarr Sahib, about 10km from Chamkaur Sahib, that the two motorcyclists shot at him. But while one bullet shot through the windscreen and pierced his left arm near the bicep, another hit the rear of the car. As the attackers fled, Shergill managed to drive to a hospital in the town from where he was referred to the PGIMER in Chandigarh. He is reported to be in a stable state.

Shergill's lone security guard provided by the state police had been withdrawn in September last year after the guard allegedly fired upon a superintendent of police at a wedding in Kharar. Shergill, who is also the president of Mahatma Gandhi Welfare Sanghthan, Punjab, had been making efforts to be provided a replacement.

The SSP said a case under section 307 (attempt to murder) with section 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and also under the Arms Act was registered. Forensic experts were also called in for assisting the probe team.
