Not impressed with the conduct of his men, UT senior superintendent of police (SSP, traffic) Maneesh Chaudhry on Tuesday asked traffic and security cops to not behave like college boys and ensure law and order.
"You are not college lads out to flex your muscles. You are the ones to implement law, so behave accordingly," Chaudhry said while addressing traffic and security cops here. Chaudhry apprised at least 300 cops of the way they should behave with women while issuing challans or checking. The cops were given a lesson or two in mannerism and behaviour. The lesson was an outcome of the recent incident where a senior citizen was thrashed by a traffic cop at Manimajra.
While addressing the force, Chaudhry said, "I know some of you are young with friends still in colleges, but you are inducted in the Chandigarh Police. It is a city primarily inhabited by educated class, so you need to be firm but polite." He added, "We are not meant to abuse or manhandle the residents while implementing the law. If you are found misbehaving, you will be booked and can also land in jail, so you need to use constraint and not go overboard."
Chaudhry said the traffic and security staff has also been guided not to pass unnecessary remarks or awkward questions when a woman was travelling alone or along with anyone. The officer told the cops that at the same time they need to be careful as the incidents of thrashing and manhandling of cops were also not uncommon in the city.

{{/usCountry}}The members of the disciplined force were also told how to remain careful while conducting their duty, so that no one harmed them.
The development is significant as some of the head constables and constables come from villages and directly join duty without going through any formal training.
Talking to HT, Chaudhry said, "The cops have been sensitised so that they are clear about the law and bindings which come along with it. We are also organising gender sensitisation and child right workshop for the cops to make them further aware." The remaining cops will be given lessons on Wednesday. Last year also English and communication skills training course was organised for the cops.
