A cousin was held for raping a 19-year-old at Jhampur village in Kharar sub-division of SAS Nagar on Thursday.
The accused has been identified as 21-year-old Gurpreet Singh, who was booked on the statement of the victim.
In her statement to the police, the victim told the police that on the night of March 26, she was alone in her house when the accused barged into her house and raped her.
The victim said her mother and brother had gone to attend a marriage in the village. The victim said that the accused fled the spot on hearing the footsteps of her mother and brother, who even saw him fleeing taking advantage of the darkness.
“On the statement of the girl we have registered a case and got her medical examination done. The accused Gurpreet Singh, who is victim's cousin, has been arrested,” said Kulbir Singh, SHO, Balongi, where the case was registered.
