They have been charged with the murder of taxi driver Praveen, who allegedly committed suicide in police custody at the Sadar police station on Sunday night. The two policemen were booked under Section 302 of the IPC as residents of Praveen's native village staged an indefinite dharna at the police station.

Praveen had, on September 11, ferried a boy and a girl, belonging to different castes and believed to have eloped from home, to New Delhi. The police had detained Praveen on the pretext that his life was in danger as the girl's relatives could kill him for ferrying the two to New Delhi.
