From this academic session, DAV, Sector 15, will introduce legal studies as one of the elective subjects in Classes 11 and 12, making it the first school in the tricity to do so.
The course was introduced by the Central Board of Secondary Education last year as a pilot project in the NCR to make students aware of the Indian legal system.
The board invited response from private schools that wished to introduce the course, but schools in the tricity, except DAV, Sector 15, have not been receptive to the idea.
Moreover, the course has received a lukewarm response from the Panchkula region of the board which has jurisdiction over Punjab, Haryana, Himachal, Chandigarh and J&K: only 10 schools are learnt to have opted for it.
However, the course has been received well in other regions, with over 600 schools having already applied for the course.
CBSE regional officer RJ Khanderao said the response from the schools of the Panchkula region has not been very encouraging thus far. “But we hope that more schools will opt for the course once it gets the desired results,” he said.
The course, he said, was introduced to not only prepare those who wished to pursue a career in the legal field but to introduce students to the constitution of the India and other laws of the land as well as to make them aware of the judicial system of the country.
