Despite onion supplies increasing in the market, retail onion prices remained high at `50-60 per kg in the city on Thursday.

The newly constituted team comprising SDM (east) Danish Ashraf and SDM (south) Kashish Mittal conducted a raid at the grain market in Sector 26. The onion stocks were tallied with the stock register of all wholesalers selling onion and necessary instructions were given to the secretary of the market committee to monitor the prices on daily basis.

The inspection team decided that these raids and regular inspections would be carried out for onion as well as for all those commodities in which the prices were rising tremendously.

The step was taken on the directions of ministry of consumer affairs. The letter sent to the UT administration read, “Since the onion forms an important item of daily consumption and its higher prices can have an immediate adverse impact on the family budget consumers in general and poor section. It is requested to take necessary steps to ensure that the availability of onion in the market is adequate and the onions stored, if any, in the state is released timely, so that the supply improves and there will be a sobering effect on prices.”

When contacted, the DC said they want to ensure that the city residents were not fleeced by the traders and they get the food articles at reasonable prices.

He further added, “Strict action will be taken against traders caught stocking food articles.”
