In a letter addressed to dean student welfare (DSW) Navdeep Goyal, the students said that if the university was made a no-vehicle zone during elections, the violence on the campus could be brought down.

The representation came from National Students Union of India, Student Federation of India, Students for Society, Ambedkar Students Association, Indian National Student Organisation, Hindustan Student Association and Youth Welfare Association.

Two of the groups NSUI and INSO were part of the student council elected last year.

The initiative assumes significance as the PU student parties are infamous for using swanky cars for election rallies and even otherwise to impress the voters. Most top leaders of the parties are often seen zooming around in SUVs throughout the day. In the last elections, many student groups had hired the SUVs to impress the student voters.

The situation worsens as the electioneering picks up.

The students claimed that more vehicles mean more outsiders on the campus. If the entry of vehicles is banned, the incidents of brawls and eve teasing on the campus will come down, they said.
