In a letter written to the railway minister, Saini Bhawan Rupnagar Managing Committee president Dr Ajmer Singh and secretary Balbir Singh Saini said Rupnagar railway station served about 3,000 passengers every day.

They added that apart from the local population of Rupnagar, students of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Rupnagar, the people of Baddi (Himachal Pradesh) industrial area were also dependant on this station.

The committee members said the station needed a footbridge and another platform as several passenger and goods trains passed through the station every day. They demanded that an overhead footbridge and an additional platform would help conduct smooth movements of passengers at the station.

"It is difficult, especially for elderly, children and disabled to board or alight from a train on a track that does not have a platform. Moving in the platform is also laborious while carrying luggage."

The situation turned worse when two passenger, mail or goods trains were halted at the station, they added.
