Medicos Legal Action Group, (MLAG), a group of Chandigarh-based medical professionls, on Wednesday, condemned the alleged arrest of Dr Rajender Kumar, senior medical officer at a government hospital at Bassi Pathana.
Dr Kumar was arrested after a woman died following her delivery at a Bassi Pathana government hospital on Monday. The family of the deceased had alleged medical negligence on part of the doctor.
MLAG has also flayed the Punjab Police for not providing protection to doctors of the government hospital despite the Punjab Protection of Medicare Service Persons Act and Medicare Service Institutions (prevention of violence and damage to property) Act 2008.
Dr Neeraj Nagpal, convenor, MLAG, in a statement issued here, on Wednesday, said, "Not only the police failed to provide protection as pern the law, they also arrested the complainant Dr Rajender Kumar against guidelines issued by the Supreme Court in Jacob Mathew vs State of Punjab case."
According to this judgment, he said, a doctor could not be arrested without a medical board's opinion being taken. Dr Nagpal said this was not the first such incidence where a patient's
relatives and friends indulged in violence and arson.

Dr Sandeep Dhavan, founder trustee of MLAG demanded strict action against the 'erring' policemen. He also sought arrest of those had indulged in vandalism at the hospital.
