In what is being seen as a Facebook romance turning into a nightmare after marriage, over alleged demand for dowry, police have booked a 27-year-old Sector-26 resident, an engineer with SpiceJet, for murder after his family brought her wife’s body to a private hospital in Sector 25 under suspicious circumstances on Friday night.

The police registered the case after the mother of the deceased, Jai Shree, a Bengaluru resident, complained that her daughter had been facing continuous harassment for dowry ever since her marriage in March 2014, after the couple had got in touch via Facebook.

“Within a few days of marriage, Suchim Gupta and his family started harassing my daughter for dowry and demanded Rs 5 lakh,” she alleged. Her claim was vindicated as police found that the distance between the table and the ceiling fan, with which the woman’s in-laws said she had hung herself, was more than the deceased’s height. They also saw injury marks below Pooja’s chin.

“We have booked the victim’s husband, Suchim, her father-in-law, Anil Gupta, mother-in-law, Anita Gupta, and grandmother of her husband, Chanchal Gupta under Sections 302 (for murder), 304B (for dowry death) and 34 (for act done by several persons in furtherance of common intentions) of the IPC,” said Chandimandir SHO, inspector Arvind Kumar.
