Virtually enacting the Russian roulette scene made famous by Amjad ‘Gabbar’ Khan in ‘Sholay’, a drunk jail official shot dead the manager of a liquor tavern (‘ahata’) near the inter-state bus terminus here on Tuesday afternoon.

Sangrur central jail’s assistant jail superintendent Bohad Singh, who resides in the jail quarters here, fired at Ranjiv Singh aka Kala with his .38-bore service revolver after the tavern employees refused to bring him more liquor. Bohad was reportedly on leave on Tuesday.

Before shooting the manager, the jail official aimed his weapon at two tavern employees and pulled the trigger. However, the revolver did not fire on both occasions.

Sooraj, a tavern employee, said: “The man (accused) was asking for more liquor. When I did not do his bidding, he pulled the trigger. Having failed to shoot me, he turned towards my colleague Karan, but with the same result.”

Karan said, “Bohad Singh then fired at the manager. A bullet pierced his head, leading to his death on the spot.”

The DSP added that the accused sometimes didn’t even pay for his drinks; it was his family that used to do it later. The accused managed to flee from the spot with his weapon and a search is on to arrest him, the police said.
