Eight officials convicted in graft cases: Punjab VB

Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) arrested DSP Varinderpreet Singh and secured the convictions of eight accused officials in six vigilance cases in April. VB chief director DGP Suresh Arora said today that the Bureau had put in its best efforts to eradicate corruption, especially among public servants.

Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) arrested DSP Varinderpreet Singh and secured the convictions of eight accused officials in six vigilance cases in April. Disclosing this here on Thursday, VB chief director DGP Suresh Arora said the Bureau had put in its best efforts to eradicate corruption, especially among public servants.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, he said that in April the VB had nabbed DSP Varinderpreet Singh, who was posted at Batala, while accepting Rs 40,000 as bribe from a complainant to register her complaint.

"The bureau has also registered a criminal case against two suspect corrupt officials to probe into the allegations. In April, special courts sentenced eight accused in six vigilance cases after finding them guilty," he added.

The accused included Inderjit Singh, ETO, Jaiton (Faridkot); Sukhwinder Singh, kanungo of Boha; Naresh Kumar, patwari, Dalelwala (Mansa); head constable Harmeh Singh of the Dugari police post in Ludhiana; Darshan Singh Handa and Avinash Kumar, assistant, district industry center, Ferozepur; Dharmpal, junior engineer, Powercom, Pathankot; and Sarbjit Singh, a forest guard posted at Khanna, who were awarded imprisonment ranging from two years to four years, along with fine.
