The Punjab and Haryana high court on Tuesday directed Chandigarh inspector general of police (IGP) to ensure protection to a Sector-39 resident, Navpreet Kaur, from one Ranjit Singh who was allegedly intimidating her.
The petition came up for hearing before a vacation bench headed by justice Amol Rattan Singh on Tuesday.
Seeking protection, Navpreet accused her neighbour Ranjit Singh of blackmailing her to pay him extortion money and threatening her personally as well as through short message service (SMS) on cell phone. She also levelled serious allegations against a Chandigarh Police DSP and SHO in the case.
Navpreet, a physiotherapist, had lodged an FIR on July 21 last year against Ranjit Singh under Sections 384 (attempt for extortion), 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC and 66-A of Information and Technology Act (sending threatening SMSes).
The court was told that even the IGP did not take any action on her complaint and did not provide her security. The petitioner submitted that on March 26, she got a threatening SMS from mobile number 7404263411 that “you may remember that whatever may take place against you will not have my hand in it even distantly.”
Appearing for the petitioner, advocate HC Arora informed the court that even after filing of the petition, Ranjit Singh did not stop from sending threatening SMS to his client.

{{/usCountry}}The petitioner also leveled serious allegations against Charanjit Singh, station house officer of Sector-39 police station and deputy superintendent of police Ashish Kapoor of being “too intimate and friendly” with Ranjit Singh, who has been a leader of Students Organisaton of Panjab University (SOPU) and is now allied to Indian National Lok Dal (INLD).
The case would now come up for hearing on April 23.
