Surat Singh Khalsa, who has been on indefinite hunger strike since January 16 demanding the release of Sikh prisoners, was on Thursday shifted to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, after his condition deteriorated.

A native of Hassanpur village in Ludhiana, Khalsa was undergoing treatment at the Hero heart institute since June 1. On Wednesday, Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali had met Khalsa at the hospital.

Khalsa’s daughter Sarvinder Kaur claimed the police was set to shift her father to the civil hospital on Wednesday. “It was only after I resisted, the police dropped the idea,” she said.
