A man hammered his 12-year-old son to death at Akalgarh village in Kurali on Thursday just because the victim refused to bring him liquor from a shop nearby.
The victim has been identified as Rajbir Singh, a student of Class 6. His brother Arshdeep Singh, 13, a student of Class 7, had a narrow escape when the accused, Sukhwinder Singh, was thrashing them.
The police said the accused, an alcoholic, asked both of his sons to bring a liquor bottle from a shop, when the boys were getting ready for their school. They denied to do so, following which Sukhwinder started thrashing them.
He locked them in a room and continued thrashing them. Meanwhile, one of them managed to escape but when Rajbir tried to flee, Sukhwinder caught hold of him and repeatedly hit his head with a hammer. After committing the crime, the accused didn't try to escape as he sat near the body.
Sadar station house officer (SHO) Gurdeep Singh said Arshdeep raised an alarm following which the neighbours reached the spot. Finding the boy lying in a pool of blood, they took him to the civil hospital. The doctors referred him to PGIMER, Chandigarh, where the victim was declared brought dead.
The SHO said Sukhwinder has been arrested and a case under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC has been registered against him.
The police said Sukhwinder's wife had left the house a few days ago due to his addiction to alcohol. "The boys had slept at neighbour's house last night because their father was overdrunk. They went to their house in the morning to get ready for their school when the accused asked them to bring liquor,"the SHO added.
