Opposing Foreign Direct Investment in retail sector, Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Tuesday said that it may be successful in a developed country like USA but not in India.
Badal, who was here at JCD Vidyapeeth for inaugurating the super speciality hospital and trauma centre, said during the press conference "If FDI comes, the biggies would eat into the share of small fries, which would be against the idea of social welfare".
Referring to the impact of foreign investment during pre-independence era, Badal said "A foreign company named East India Company was allowed in India for doing business, and what it did, is known to everyone, so we oppose it outrightly".
While responding to a query raised by mediapersons on Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and Samajwadi party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, he said "People should not read much from the meeting of the two, as beyond politics, Mulayam is a family friend, and it was a courtesy call from his side".
He said that under given circumstances, UPA government may crumble anytime, as it is anti-common man which has hiked the essential commodities several times making life miserable for the common man.

Later, while addressing the gathering at JCD, Badal lauded the role of Chaudhary Devi Lal for fighting the issues of a common man, he said "Being chief minister, prime minister or president is one thing, but being the leader of common man is really different and Devi Lal was the leader of common man" said Badal, on the occasion of 99th birth anniversary of former deputy prime minister.
