KK Verma, the first vice-chancellor of India's first university of physical education and sports at Gwalior, has been nominated for 'Lifetime Achievement Award' by Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar.
Sources confirmed that GNDU is hosting Global Scientific Conference on Physical Education, Health and Sports Sciences (GLOPEHSS-2013) from January 24 to 26. The academic review board of GLOPEHSS-2013 has unanimously decided to honor Verma on the occasion.
The intimation in this regard was conveyed by Baljinder Singh Bal and Amandeep Singh, joint secretaries, and Sukhdev Singh, secretary of conference. Verma has been chosen for his contribution to the field of physical education, health and sports. Till now he has published more than 300 national/international articles, about 10 books and organised and inaugurated more than 50 conferences in India and abroad and have guided more than 30 research scholars.
He was also honoured at a global conference on physical education at Amravati, Maharashtra, on January 15, 2013, and was a guest of honour in Kurukshetra University alumni meet recently.
His students have brought laurels to the country in the field of sports and bagged the Arjuna award.
Born in 1939 in Punjab, Verma started his carrier as a hockey coach from Panjab University, Chandigarh, before shifting to Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, where he started department of physical education.

He served as chairperson, dean, member of executive council, member of court and academic council of Kurukshetra University. He is an active member of distinguished societies and governing bodies. Verma has done his doctoral degree from Kurukshetra University and post-doctorate from Alberta University, Canada.
The news of honouring Verma spread a wave of cheer among his friends and students who gathered at his Chandigarh residence to congratulate him.
