Two major protests in Panchkula, on Tuesday, kept the police on toes as hundreds of guest teachers and health workers marched up to their respective department headquarters and sloganeered against the government and chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
Violation Section 144 of CrPC, the guest teachers’ association imposed around Siksha Sadan in Sector-5 and sat outside the office in the afternoon. They also blocked the entry to the Siksha Sadan from one side. Despite repeated attempts by the duty magistrate, Ashwani Gambhir, to pacify them, the teachers threatened saying they would resort to lathi charge. Finally, better sense prevailed after the teachers’ representatives met the higher officials and the protest was postponed till Wednesday.
“We have been assured by director Vivek Atrey that our case has been put forward before the CM. The government has formed a policy for seeking regulation of guest teachers and we want that it should be implemented at the earliest. There are 15,000 guest teachers in the state,” said Bhupinder Singh, general secretary of guest teachers’ association.
Also, Multipurpose Health Workers (MPHW) Association members marched upto the office of Director General Health Services (DGHS). They were demanding that the MPHW workers should be absorbed in Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) programme and equal pay for equal work, leave travel allowance and provident fund should also be given to them. While the police stopped them at the gate, there was some scuffle and as policemen pushed president Lajwanti Bewaal. Finally, after an assurance from deputy director, Kamla Singh, the blockade outside the DGHS’s office DGHS was lifted. “Principal secretary health Navraj Sandhu will consider our demands on August 19,” said Bewaal.
