A few senior leaders of Congress, including former minister Romesh Dutt Sharma and former member of legislative assembly (MLA) Rana KP Singh, boycotted the event. Anandpur Sahib member of Parliament (MP) Ravneet Singh Bittu, who was in town, also chose to skip it. PPCC general secretary Fateh Jung Singh Bajwa was to attend the event, but failed to turn up.

Saini was appointed as the new president recently with a number of Congress leaders, including Sharma and Rana, reportedly opposing his appointment because he was an outsider - from SAS Nagar.

Channi took a dig at the leaders who boycotted the ceremony and said every Congress worker should accept the party's decision.

In his address, Saini said he would work for strengthening the party in the districts by taking along all the workers and leaders of the party. He downplayed the opposition to his appointment saying that all would be fine in the coming days.

Bittu said the committee constituted by the All India Congress Committee for listening to the grievances of party workers regarding the list of office bearers would meet the workers and leaders of Anandpur Sahib Lok Sabha constituency on January 29.
