The Haryana government has notified the Haryana State Commission for Women Act, 2012, to constitute a state commission for women.
Women and child development department director general Sumita Misra on Thursday said the Act had been enacted to strengthen the state women's commission by providing it a statutory status.
Under the Act, the state government would constitute a body, Haryana State Commission for Women.
Misra said the enactment of the Act was required because, as per the existing status of the commission, it did not exercise all the powers of a civil court like summoning, requiring the production of any document, receiving evidence on affidavit, examination of witnesses and documents, implementation of laws enacted to provide protection to women, compliance of policy decisions, guidelines aimed at mitigating hardships and ensuring welfare and providing relief to women.
She said the commission would comprise a woman chairperson, a vice-chairperson and five members. The government will nominate the seven members from amongst persons it deems to be of ability, integrity and standing. At least one member would belong to a Scheduled Caste community.
The state government will also nominate the member secretary, who is preferably from women officers of the Indian Administrative Services or Haryana Civil Service. The administrative secretary of women and child development, Haryana, would be a special invitee. Haryana women and child development direct and the state director general of police would be the ex-officio members of the commission, she said.
