Heavy rains lash Haryana, Punjab

Widespread rains lashed Punjab and Haryana today even as many parts of the region are still battling the recent fury of floods, which has so far claimed 51 lives in the two states.

Widespread rains lashed Punjab and Haryana on Tuesday even as many parts of the region are still battling the recent fury of floods, which has so far claimed 51 lives in the two states.

Fatehabad, which is among the worst-hit districts of Haryana recorded 47 mm of rains, while Rewari received heavy downpour and got 78 mm of rains.

Among other places in the state to be lashed by rains were Narnaul (115 mm), Sonepat (95 mm), where many low-lying areas were submerged, many parts of Gurgaon district, including Tohana (50 mm), Karnal (58.4 mm), Rohtak (19.1 mm), Panchkula (10 mm) and Panipat (47 mm).

Chandigarh also received moderate showers and registered 14.7 mm of rains.

In Punjab, Patiala was worst-hit by the floods which received 43.2 mm of rain today.

The other places in the state to be lashed by rains included Ludhiana (1.8 mm), Madhopur (7 mm), Garhshankar (23 mm), Nakodar (11 mm), Mohali (11 mm), Amloh (16.5 mm) and Mansa (40 mm).

Tuesday's widespread rains were the second major spell after the arrival of south-west monsoon on July 5 in the region.

26 people have died in Haryana, while 25 flood-related deaths have been reported from Punjab during the past two weeks.
