Acting on the Hindustan Times report (‘At Rs 40 lakh per MBBS seat, Adesh varsity charges 20-fold’, June 11), regarding the charging of hefty fee by Adesh University, Bathinda, from MBBS aspirants, the government has sought explanation from the registrar of the university.
In a letter date June 16 — with a copy of the news clipping that appeared in HT on June 11 — joint secretary, department of medical education and research, Manmohan Singh, asked the university registrar to explain the issue immediately. In the letter, he has asked the university that “the communication should be considered most urgent and send the explanation to the government i mmediately through email, speed post or fax”.
On June 11, HT had highlighted that Adesh University collected management-quota tuition fee (Rs 40.28 lakh for five years) from all candidates, while the state gover nment rules required 50% candidates ( 75 in this case) to pay only
Rs 2.2 lakh in the first year, as they will occupy the government-quota seats based on merit in the All-India Pre-Medical Test.
Their annual fee should increase 10% each year, so the five-year charges should not come to more than Rs 13.42 lakh. {{/usCountry}}Earlier acting on the HT report of June 11, the Punjab government on Monday had stopped the university from holding a separate counselling for admission in MBBS courses scheduled for Tuesday. The government made it clear that there would be only one centralised counselling for all MBBS and BDS seats in the state. It will be conducted by Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, from June 21.
