While horror as a genre is fast picking up pace in Bollywood, the only thing scary about these movies is having to endure a never-ending parade of scantily clad ghosts or damsels in distress, but director Satish Kaushik promises us something different with his upcoming film, Gang of Ghosts.

In Chandigarh with his cast, which includes Anupam Kher, Mahie Gill and Sharman Joshi, the director tells us why he chose to dabble in this particular genre. “People told me I always make romance-based films, so I decided why not try something different. This film is a comedy though and doesn’t have the horror element,” says he.It is the story of a group of affable ghosts from different eras, played by Anupam Kher and Mahie Gill amongst others, who are living together in harmony in an old decrepit mansion that is soon to be pulled down and replaced by a swanky mall.

Shot in an actual haunted haveli in Gujarat, Anupam Kher narrates an incident from the set: “I did see a ghost there, turned out that was Satish’s shadow and so I would like to add that in my personal opinion, ghosts are more to do with our imagination than reality.” Actress Mahie Gill, who plays the ghost of a 1950s actress, says she drew inspiration from the late Meena Kumari for the role.

“In this film, I am very much alive and not a ghost, and I am also the narrator for the most part. It is a role that could have gotten very monotonous, but under Satish Kaushik’s direction, that is not a worry,” he smiles. With Ragini MMS 2 starring Sunny Leone also set to hit theaters on March 21, the cast of Gang of Ghosts is not worried at all. “I have a bathing scene in the movie, so that’s our sex appeal quotient taken care of,” quips Kher.
