Paying no heed to rules, the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) is going to hire doctors on an ad hoc basis instead of hiring them on contract. Due to financial and legal liabilities pertaining to ad hoc doctors, the department of personnel and training (DoPT) has issued standing instructions that medical institutions must go for hiring on contract, in case there is a need for temporary staff.

However, according to a recent advertisement, the PGIMER is going to conduct a walk-in-interview to hire three assistant professors for the department of gastroenterology and paediatrics on August 16.

A large number of senior resident doctors in different departments are also being hired on ad hoc basis.

The issue

Ad hoc faculty and doctors are entitled for all kinds of allowances and perks on the lines of the regular staff. They are even entitled to attend international medical conferences on government expenses and often take legal route for regularisation of their services. However, contractual doctors can be paid salaries in lump sum.

Following the DoPT instructions, most of the premier medical institutes have abolished the ad hoc system of hiring and have started hiring on contract.
