According to GMCH officials, Jagtar Singh, an operation theatre technician who was to join his duty in the operation theatre at 8am, was waiting for the elevator on the hospital’s first floor around 7.45am. “As the elevator was taking some time to reach on the floor he was waiting on, so he opened the elevator door with a drop key (used by the rescue workers to gain access into a closed elevator door),” said Dr AK Janmeja, medical superintendent.

A staff nurse, who was standing beside him to whom a few moments back he was asking to go with him in the elevator as it will reach quickly, said, “The shaft was totally dark when he opened the door. Without seeing whether the elevator had come, he stepped in and fell into the shaft.”

The hospital officials said he suffered minor injuries and was immediately taken to the Emergency and his condition was stable.
