Finance secretary VK Singh said that acting on representations submitted by industry associations, UT administrator Shivraj Patil agreed to allow trade related to both software and hardware in Industrial Area 1 & 2. Formal notification is expected in a month.

Those interested in setting up IT and ITeS units would have to submit an application with detailed project report and the administration would give permission on case-by-case basis. Sources said the administration won't charge any fee.

The Industries Association of Chandigarh (IAC) and the Chamber of Chandigarh Industries (CCI) had been raising the demand for several years. Industrialist Pankaj Khanna welcomed the decision, terming it "a historic step which would propel the industrial area into vibrant hub for trade".

Arun Mahajan, president of IAC, and Sandeep Sahni, president of CCI, thanked the administrator and also requested implementation of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act, 2006. If the administration agrees to implement the MSMED Act, it would pave the way for sale of motor vehicles, retail in non-specialised stores, stalls and markets, hotels and motels, warehouses, hospitals and motion picture projections in the industrial areas.
