Intense cold conditions prevailed in Punjab and Haryana on Saturday with minimum temperature remaining around two notches below normal even as dense fog continued to disrupt normal life in the region with several areas witnessing zero visibility.
A thick blanket of fog disrupted rail, road and air traffic in the plains of Punjab and Haryana as several places, including Amritsar, Pathankot, Bathinda, Sirsa, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Ambala and Halwara remained engulfed in heavy fog reducing visibility to zero metres, officials said in Chandigarh.
While motorists moved at snail's pace with headlights on, several trains bound towards Chandigarh and Amritsar ran hours behind schedule.
The minimum temperature in the region remained around two degrees below normal, the Met office said in Chandigarh.
Amritsar was the coldest place in the plains with a low of 1.8 degrees Celsius, which was two notches below normal.
Besides, Patiala, Ludhiana and Ambala shivered at 5.5 degrees Celsius followed by Bhiwani at five degrees Celsius.
While Rohtak settled at a low of 4.4 degrees Celsius, the minimum temperature at Narnaul was three degrees Celsius, two notches below normal.
