Kabir books twin quarterfinal berths

City lad Kabir Manrai put up a fine show to enter both singles and doubles quarterfinals of the under-18 boys’ section in the ongoing AITA Talent Series tennis tournament, being organised at the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association complex, Sector 10, on Tuesday.

City lad Kabir Manrai put up a fine show to enter both singles and doubles quarterfinals of the under-18 boys’ section in the ongoing AITA Talent Series tennis tournament, being organised at the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association complex, Sector 10, on Tuesday.

Manrai made it to last eight of the singles event after defeating Jagdeep Singh Bajwa in a closely-fought three-setter. While Manrai claimed the first set 6-4, Bajwa made it even by winning the second set 6-4. In the decider, however, Manrai reclaimed his form to win the set, and the match, 6-1.

Later in the day, Manrai teamed up with Calvin Golmei to thrash Shivam Vij and Parmeet Deol 6-2, 6-1, thus making it to the doubles quarterfinal as well.

For Golmei, too, it was his second pre-quarterfinal win in the day. He had earlier defeated Savneet Singh Bajwa 6-0, 6-2 in straight sets in the singles event.

In other boys’ singles prequarterfinal matches, Mridul Kharakwal defeated Raunaq Singh Marwaha 6-4, 6-2, while Aditya Vashisht made a short work of Abhimanyu Rojra 6-2, 6-3. Sabrang Sandal also made it to the last-eight stage with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sarthak Jain.

Archit Juneja completed the line-up after getting walk-over from Cheerag Bajwa.

In girls’ singles, Princy Panchal, a trainee of CLTA’s rural tennis programme called CHART, upset top seed Jahnavi Shivran 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, to enter the quarterfinal round. Khushbeen Kaur, Smera Mehta, Saumya Saxena, Jannat Khurana, Harleen Kaur, Tanmay Patnayak and Seerat Kaur Pannu were the other players who made it to the last-eight stage.
